Reading is a life-long skill. It is one of the keys to a successful school experience, better job opportunities, and better way of life in general! I am proud and happy to provide extra reading instruction to students in grades 5 through 8. Smaller class sizes and use of an award-winning reading program (READ 180) enable my students to work at their own level while challenging them to learn new vocabulary and skills.
Each year, I assist with screening all of Morrison's students in grades 5-8 at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year in order to determine reading abilities and needs. Currently, we are using a computer-based software program called STAR Reading. It is a timed test containing 34 questions about vocabulary and comprehension skills. Please ask your child about his/her results as we want all students to be aware of their results...and room for growth!
Another aspect of my job is as co-chair for our annual ELA Family Reading Night! This reading-centered event gives staff the opportunity to explain the use of the Accelerated Reader program (a computer-based program which allows students to take short comprehension quizzes over books read).
As the mother of two boys, I understand the challenges often faced by parents when their child doesn't want to read or can't find a book they enjoy. I am here as a resource not only for students, but also for parents. Please contact me if you have a question about your child's reading performance: firstname.lastname@example.org
. I look forward to working with your family!
